When football used to be good.
He was fucking terrifying on his day - absolute beast and easily the best player in that league in around the end of the 80's.
His head amuses me no end too. It's fucking HUGE.
It's like Volley's derby.

Fifth, I'd be surprised if anyone was as thick as McAteer, ever.

The defender somehow got underneath and in front of Lineker to head it away.

That goal in a FRIENDLY did him no favours at all in retrospect. Spent most of his England career as a shuffling shambling mess. Which was extraordinary given his club performances.

My memory obviously deserts me but he was a major disappointment at international level. Like Hoddle
Maybe he should have been a coach rather than a manager. Not sure how any manager cant win games with Celtic. That must take some doing

Great player but anyone that chooses Jason McAteer as his number 2 has no place in football management, regardless of colour.

Cholo is correct, Barnes had a blinder in that short sub appearance v Argentina. The 2nd header Lineker ended up in the net but the ball sadly fell the other side of it.

I recall him being at Newcastle during the 97/98 season, well past his prime, but still managed to smash a volley in from about 20 yards to give the Toon a 1-0 win at Upton Park.

Tranmere Rovers players allegedly nicknamed Barnes and Jason McAteer Dumb and Dumber in the short period they managed the club.

Sven
Barnes made one substitute appearance at the 86 world cup, when he came on against argentina and almost turned the match on its head, setting up Lineker for a goal and an identical chance that jug ears should've buried.

I had my wedding photos taken on the steps outside the hotel we had the reception at. It was the only way in and out of the hotel.
It took ages, like wedding photos do. All the time there was someone standing around at the back, out of shot, waiting patiently to get out without complaining.
When we finished he quietly walked around the edges of the throng to his waiting car.
It was John Barnes. He smiled and said congratulations. Didn't do the "don't you know who I am" and get out before we'd finished.
For that reason I have always liked John Barnes.
